The Abia State Government has approved the immediate installation of speed breakers on major roads across Umuahia and other parts of the state, in a bid to curb over-speeding and reduce road accidents.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu said the decision was driven by growing safety concerns linked to ongoing road construction and reconstruction, particularly in Umuahia, which has inadvertently encouraged motorists to speed.
“With the construction and reconstruction of some of the roads in Umuahia, the lives of commuters now appear to be at risk as a result of over-speeding,” he stated.
According to him, the installation of speed breakers is a proactive measure aimed at mitigating the danger and enhancing road safety across the state.
Beyond road safety, the government also announced the release of funds to fast-track ongoing infrastructure projects, alongside urban beautification initiatives. These include tree planting, landscaping, painting of kerbs, and installation of road signs along key routes such as Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard, Library Avenue, and the corridor from Shoprite through Aba Park.
Progress has also been recorded at the Afara Relief Market, where perimeter fencing has been completed and compensation paid to affected landowners.
On infrastructure expansion, the Umuahia Capital Development Authority is set to commence rehabilitation of internal roads within the Methodist Theological Institute, Umuahia.
The government further announced the establishment of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority to complement existing agencies and drive development in Abia North. The agency has already initiated several road projects, including the Amaekpu-Ohafia Ring Road and other strategic routes aimed at improving connectivity and facilitating agricultural transport.
Kanu revealed that direct labour projects are ongoing in 51 locations statewide, while key roads such as the Abiriba Road (Orieagwa Junction to Amaogudu Roundabout) and the Okpuala–Umuala–Nbawsi Road have recently been completed.
He also announced that a burial service for the late Uma Ukpai will hold at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, on March 25, 2026.
Officials say the introduction of speed breakers marks a critical step toward safer roads, as the state balances rapid infrastructure development with the protection of lives.
