Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in an entertaining quarter-final that was decided after extra time.

Argentina took the lead in the first half through Alexis Mac Allister, who finished off a move created by Lionel Messi. Switzerland responded with determination and drew level in the second half through Dan Ndoye, sending the match into extra time.

The turning point came when Switzerland were reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Breel Embolo. Argentina capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Julián Álvarez restoring the lead in extra time before Lautaro Martínez added a late goal to seal a 3-1 victory.

Messi once again played a crucial role, providing an assist and leading Argentina’s attack as the South American giants kept alive their hopes of successfully defending the World Cup title.

The victory sends Argentina into a mouthwatering semi-final clash against England, with both sides now just one win away from reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

For Switzerland, the defeat marked the end of an impressive tournament run, while Argentina continue their quest to become the first nation in decades to retain the FIFA World Cup title.
