Mbappé Penalty Decides France vs Paraguay World Cup Clash
Kylian Mbappé’s coolly taken penalty proved decisive as France edged Paraguay 1-0 in a fiercely contested 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match in Philadelphia. The victory sends Les Bleus into the quarter-finals, where they will face Morocco, while Paraguay’s inspiring tournament run comes to an end.
France entered the match as one of the tournament favourites after an impressive group-stage campaign, but Paraguay produced another disciplined display that frustrated Didier Deschamps’ side for much of the afternoon. Playing in scorching 39°C heat, Paraguay defended with intensity and organisation, limiting France’s usually explosive attack to very few clear-cut opportunities.

Désiré Doué Changes the Game
The breakthrough finally came in the 70th minute after substitute Désiré Doué injected fresh energy into France’s attack. The young winger burst into the penalty area before being brought down by Diego Gómez.
Referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially waved play on, but after a VAR review he overturned his decision and awarded France a penalty.
Paraguay’s players attempted to unsettle Mbappé before the kick, delaying the restart and scuffing the penalty spot. None of it affected the French captain. Mbappé calmly sent goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the tournament and finally break Paraguay’s resistance.

Mbappé Levels Messi in Golden Boot Race
The goal moved Mbappé level with Lionel Messi in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot. More importantly for France, it secured a hard-earned place in the quarter-finals after one of their toughest matches of the tournament.
Paraguay continued to battle until the final whistle, and the closing stages became increasingly physical as frustration grew. France defended their slender advantage well, denying Paraguay a late equaliser to seal a valuable knockout victory.

France to Face Morocco in the Quarter-Finals
France will now prepare for a blockbuster quarter-final against Morocco in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 9. The meeting is a repeat of their memorable 2022 World Cup semi-final and promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the last eight.
Although Paraguay’s World Cup journey ends here, they leave the tournament with enormous credit after eliminating Germany and pushing one of the world’s strongest teams to the limit.
The clash may have lacked goals, but it showcased France’s patience, resilience and ability to find a way through when it mattered most—qualities that could prove crucial as their quest for another world title continues.
