Former Super Eagles captain and Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has revealed that he has repeatedly turned down invitations to return and take up roles in Nigerian football, citing his dissatisfaction with the country’s football administration.
Speaking during a podcast hosted by former England striker Peter Crouch, Mikel expressed frustration with the leadership of Nigerian football, saying he could not work with administrators whom he believes lack the vision and expertise needed to develop the game.
According to the former midfielder, many officials have remained in influential positions for years without delivering meaningful progress while continuing to control the administration of football in the country.
“We don’t have people that know about football. They occupy their positions year after year, controlling everything. They are reluctant to relinquish their power and the financial benefits that come with it,” Mikel said.
He disclosed that he has received several invitations to return and contribute to Nigerian football but has consistently rejected the offers.
“I have received calls to return and get involved, but I have declined. Those individuals need to go. I cannot work with people who do not share the same objectives as I do,” he stated.
Mikel maintained that Nigerian football possesses enormous potential and could experience significant growth if resources are properly managed and directed toward genuine football development.
He stressed that improving the standard of football in Nigeria would not be difficult if the available funds were transparently invested in the right areas, including grassroots development, infrastructure and player welfare.
The former Chelsea star also criticised what he described as a culture of prolonged leadership without measurable achievements, arguing that football administration should focus on long-term development rather than personal interests.
His comments come amid renewed debates over the management of Nigerian football and have reignited calls for reforms aimed at strengthening the Super Eagles, domestic leagues and youth development programmes.
Mikel remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated footballers, having won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and several other major honours with Chelsea, while also helping Nigeria win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.
