The Nigeria Premier Football League is preparing for one of the most dramatic finales in recent Nigerian football history as the 2025/26 league title race heads into the final day with both Lagos and Port Harcourt on standby for a potential coronation ceremony.

League leaders Rangers International F.C. sit atop the table with 65 points, just one point ahead of Rivers United F.C. on 64 points heading into Sunday’s decisive fixtures.

Rangers will travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City F.C. at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, while Rivers United host Katsina United F.C. in Port Harcourt.

To avoid any last-minute logistical complications, the NPFL has positioned championship trophies and presentation podiums in both cities ahead of the final round of matches.

NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi confirmed that the league body has replicated arrangements at both venues to ensure the champions can be crowned immediately after the final whistle.

“We don’t have a replica; we have two trophies,” Owumi explained while outlining the league’s preparations for the potentially historic finale.

The title permutations remain straightforward but tense.

A Rangers victory in Lagos guarantees the Flying Antelopes a record-extending ninth NPFL title regardless of Rivers United’s result. However, a Rangers draw or defeat combined with a Rivers United win would hand the Port Harcourt side the championship.

The task before Rangers is particularly challenging. Ikorodu City remain unbeaten at home this season and are still fighting for a CAF Confederation Cup qualification spot, turning the Lagos fixture into one of the toughest away tests of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Rivers United, managed by former Super Eagles coach Finidi George, are expected to push aggressively for victory against Katsina United while hoping for favorable news from Lagos.

The NPFL has also mandated simultaneous kickoffs across all match venues on the final day to preserve competitive fairness and prevent manipulation of results.

Beyond the title race, several clubs remain locked in battles for continental qualification and survival, adding further tension to what many analysts describe as the league’s most competitive final day in over a decade.

Football fans across Nigeria are now set for a winner-takes-all Sunday that could either see Rangers cement their dominance in domestic football or Rivers United complete a dramatic late-season comeback to reclaim the NPFL crown.
