Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over renewed attacks across Nigeria, describing the situation as a failure of leadership and a breach of recent assurances to citizens.

In a statement shared on Monday, Obi referenced the president’s recent visit to Plateau State, where he had promised victims of violence that such incidents “would not repeat itself.”

However, Obi noted that fresh attacks occurred less than 24 hours after the pledge, including an incident in Jos South Local Government Area that resulted in further casualties.

“Another presidential promise fails in less than 24 hours,” Obi said, arguing that the recurrence of violence highlights the government’s inability to fulfil its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property.

The former Anambra State governor also pointed to a broader pattern of insecurity, citing recent incidents across multiple states, including Nasarawa, Zamfara, Borno, Benue and Kaduna, where communities have reportedly suffered killings, abductions and destruction.

Describing the situation as dire, Obi warned that Nigeria is facing a “national emergency,” adding that citizens are increasingly unsafe even in their homes and communities.

“The primary responsibility of any government is to protect lives and property; however, this responsibility is failing today,” he said, stressing that the scale and frequency of attacks demand urgent and decisive action.

His remarks come amid a surge in violent incidents across parts of the country, reinforcing concerns about the persistence of insecurity despite ongoing military and government interventions.

Obi’s criticism adds to growing political pressure on the administration, as security challenges continue to dominate national discourse and shape public sentiment ahead of future elections.
