Kidney disease is often called a “silent disease” because many people do not experience noticeable symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. However, the body may give warning signs that should never be ignored.

One of the earliest signs of kidney problems is changes in urination. This may include urinating more frequently, especially at night, producing less urine than usual, or noticing urine that appears foamy, cloudy or contains blood.

Persistent swelling in the feet, ankles, hands or around the eyes can also indicate that the kidneys are not functioning properly. Damaged kidneys may struggle to remove excess fluid and sodium from the body, leading to fluid retention.

Another common symptom is ongoing fatigue and weakness. The kidneys help produce a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production. When kidney function declines, a person may develop anaemia, resulting in tiredness, weakness and difficulty concentrating.

Shortness of breath may also occur, particularly when excess fluid builds up in the lungs or when anaemia develops. Some people may experience persistent nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite or an unusual metallic taste in the mouth.

Itchy, dry skin can be another warning sign. Kidney dysfunction may cause waste products and minerals to accumulate in the bloodstream, leading to skin irritation and persistent itching.

Muscle cramps, especially in the legs, can develop due to imbalances in electrolytes such as calcium and phosphorus. Difficulty sleeping and poor concentration have also been linked to declining kidney function.

Experts advise individuals with risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease or a family history of kidney disease to undergo regular medical check-ups. Simple blood and urine tests can help detect kidney problems early, often before symptoms become severe.

Early diagnosis and proper treatment can significantly slow the progression of kidney disease and reduce the risk of serious complications, including kidney failure.
