A deeply embarrassing scene played out on the streets of Bayelsa State on Friday as personnel of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Navy were caught on camera trading punches during President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to the state an incident that has since gone viral and drawn widespread public condemnation.
A 53-second video circulating on social media showed the incident unfolding after a driver of a vehicle marked “Naval Police” stepped out and got into a verbal altercation with another driver. Moments after returning to his vehicle, a soldier bearing a rifle approached and threw the first punch, triggering an immediate and chaotic free-for-all between personnel attached to both vehicles. Stunned civilians looked on as uniformed members of the nation’s armed forces exchanged blows in full public view.

The clash reportedly occurred as President Tinubu was departing the venue of an official event during his working visit to the state. The President had been in Bayelsa to commission several infrastructure projects, including a 60-megawatt gas turbine power plant at Elebele, the Angiama-Oporoma Bridge, and road projects across the state.
The cause of the altercation had not been officially established at the time of filing this report. However, the Nigerian Navy has since moved swiftly to contain the fallout, announcing the arrest of its personnel involved in the clash.
The incident presents a glaring contradiction to the very message President Tinubu delivered during his Bayelsa visit, where he reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to tackle insecurity and pledged continued investment in equipping and training Nigeria’s security forces.
