Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face Poland and Portugal in a pair of high-profile international friendlies in June, as the team intensifies efforts to rebuild following its failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the three-time African champions will take on Poland on 3 June at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw, before travelling to face Portugal on 10 June, with the venue for the latter yet to be announced.
The fixtures are expected to provide sterner European opposition for the Super Eagles, who are seeking to regain momentum after missing out on consecutive World Cup appearances.
Under head coach Eric Chelle, the team has shown signs of transition, blending experienced players with emerging talents as part of a broader rebuilding process. Recent outings in Turkey saw Nigeria record a win over Iran and a draw against Jordan, offering glimpses of progress despite lingering inconsistencies.
The June matches will also serve as preparation for upcoming competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, while providing an opportunity to assess new players and tactical approaches.
Portugal, bound for the World Cup, are expected to use the encounter as part of their final preparations for the tournament, while Poland also absent from the global showpiece will offer a competitive test for Chelle’s evolving squad.
For Nigeria, the friendlies represent more than routine fixtures; they are a crucial step in redefining the team’s identity and restoring confidence ahead of future competitive campaigns.
