The Super Falcons of Nigeria have once again shown why they are giants of African women’s football, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over reigning champions South Africa to book their spot in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

It was a tense and electrifying semifinal showdown at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium on Tuesday evening one that kept fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Both sides came into the match with strong ambitions, but it was Nigeria who delivered when it mattered most.
From the kickoff, the Super Falcons looked the more aggressive side, controlling possession and pushing forward with purpose. Despite carving out a few early chances, their finishing let them down as South Africa’s defense stood firm.

The breakthrough eventually came moments before halftime when Nigeria earned a crucial penalty. Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up with composure and slotted home from the spot, sending the Falcons into the break with a 1-0 lead.
However, the second half brought drama of its own. South Africa capitalized on a rare moment of Nigerian defensive recklessness as Osinachi Ohale’s late challenge resulted in a penalty. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake, drawing the defending champions level.

Refusing to let the momentum slip, Nigeria’s head coach Justin Madugu reshuffled his pack introducing Christy Ucheibe and Deborah Abiodun to add fresh legs and energy to the midfield. The changes sparked life into the Nigerian side, who pressed on in search of a winner.
As tension mounted in the final minutes, the game was momentarily halted due to a worrying injury to South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado, who was stretchered off after receiving on-pitch treatment.

Then, just when it seemed extra time was inevitable, Nigeria found magic. Defender Michelle Alozie surged forward and delivered a clinical finish in the dying moments, sending the Nigerian bench into wild celebration and silencing South Africa’s hopes of back-to-back titles.
With this win, the Super Falcons march confidently into the WAFCON final, where they’ll face host nation Morocco in what promises to be a historic clash. The dream of lifting a record-extending 10th WAFCON title is now just one match away.
