Pulisic continued to dictate play before being withdrawn at halftime as a precaution, but the hosts barely missed a beat. Folarin Balogun stole the spotlight with a brilliant first-half brace, helping the USA establish a commanding lead before the break.
Pochettino’s high-intensity approach and fluid attacking movement overwhelmed a Paraguayan side known for its defensive discipline. The Americans’ relentless pressing and sharp transitions left their opponents struggling to cope throughout the opening 45 minutes.
The tempo eased after halftime, allowing Paraguay substitute Mauricio to pull one goal back with 17 minutes remaining. However, any hopes of a comeback were extinguished in stoppage time when Giovanni Reyna capped off a superb team performance with a classy outside-of-the-boot finish to make it 4-1.
While it remains too early to judge how far this USA team can go in the tournament, the opening display will certainly boost confidence. Pochettino’s pre-match claim that the United States can win the World Cup may still appear ambitious, but this dominant victory suggests the hosts could be a serious force as the competition progresses.
