The Super Eagles’ captain, William Troost-Ekong, has made it clear Nigeria’s mission is simple: win against Benin Republic.
Speaking after Nigeria’s hard-fought 2–1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday, Troost-Ekong admitted the game was anything but easy. The defender praised his teammates for showing resilience and focus under pressure, qualities he believes will be vital in their final group match.
> “Lesotho gave us a great fight; it wasn’t easy,” Troost-Ekong said. “We understand the frustration from fans, but the team showed strong mentality. We’ve been under pressure since the qualifiers began, but our goal remains clear we want to be at the World Cup.”
The Super Eagles have faced scrutiny throughout the qualifying campaign, with fans calling for improved performances. But the captain insists the squad is united and ready to finish strong.
> “We know what’s at stake against Benin. We have to win and win convincingly,” he added. “It’s going to be a big test, but the team is ready. We’ve worked hard for this moment, and I’m proud of everyone.”
For Troost-Ekong, the stakes are personal. Having featured at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, he now dreams of leading Nigeria to the 2026 World Cup as captain a moment that would mark a full-circle achievement in his international career.
The decisive clash against Benin Republic kicks off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, and all eyes will be on the Super Eagles as they aim to soar into the next stage of qualification.
