Dr. Kelechi Anosike has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State for the 2027 general election after securing victory in the party’s primary election conducted across the state.
Anosike recorded 16,543 votes in the Option A4 direct primary held simultaneously across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
His victory marks a major milestone for the PDP as the party positions itself to challenge for power in Abia after losing control of the state in the last electoral cycle.
Party officials described the exercise as largely peaceful and reflective of grassroots participation, with delegates and registered members turning out across the state’s political wards.
Anosike’s emergence followed a closely watched contest that drew attention across Abia’s political landscape, particularly because of competition from John Okiyi, a former Commissioner for Information in Abia State and one of the most visible figures in the previous PDP administration.
Okiyi entered the race with strong political structures and experience in government communication and administration, making him one of the most formidable contenders in the primary process. His campaign had projected continuity of PDP rebuilding efforts and appealed to loyal party blocs across several zones.
However, Anosike’s support base appeared to gain wider traction across the local government areas during the direct voting exercise.
Anosike, a scientist and public administrator, is widely known for his role in federal public service and has built a reputation around institutional management, public engagement and policy implementation. His emergence signals what many within the party describe as an attempt to blend technocratic credentials with grassroots mobilisation.
