Nigeria international Ademola Lookman is on the brink of making history as he prepares to feature in the Copa del Rey final with Atlético Madrid, aiming to end a 29-year wait for a Nigerian winner of the prestigious Spanish competition.

Atlético Madrid will face Real Sociedad in the 2026 final, with Lookman seeking to become the first Nigerian to lift the trophy since Emmanuel Amuneke achieved the feat with Barcelona in 1997. The Super Eagles forward has played a crucial role in Atlético’s run to the final, delivering standout performances, including a goal and an assist in the semi-final first leg against Barcelona, which proved decisive in securing qualification.

His impact since joining the Spanish side earlier this year has been immediate, adding pace and attacking threat to manager Diego Simeone’s tactical system.

Lookman’s potential triumph would end decades of near misses for Nigerian players in the competition. Finidi George came close in 1997 but finished on the losing side, while Ikechukwu Uche reached the semi-finals with Villarreal in 2015 without clinching the title.

Beyond national significance, the final also presents an opportunity for Atlético Madrid to secure silverware and cap an impressive campaign, with Lookman’s form positioning him as a key figure in the club’s pursuit of success. As anticipation builds ahead of the decisive clash, all eyes will be on the Nigerian forward to see if he can deliver a historic performance and rewrite a long-standing chapter in Nigerian football history.
