Atiku Faults NBC Over Media Advisory on 2027 Elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has faulted the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over its recent media advisory issued ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that it could undermine press freedom in Nigeria.

Atiku, in a statement shared on his verified social media account, described the directive as a troubling attempt to muzzle the media and restrict free expression as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.

He argued that Nigeria’s media space has grown into a globally respected institution and should not be subjected to what he termed “heavy-handed directives” whenever elections approach.

The former vice president further maintained that ethical journalism should not be weaponised during election periods, insisting that standards must remain constant and not be selectively enforced for political purposes.

Atiku also suggested that the timing and tone of the NBC advisory raise concerns about a broader attempt to control public narratives rather than promote fairness and transparency in the electoral process.

His remarks come amid wider criticism of the NBC directive from media rights groups and civil society organisations, who have also warned against measures they view as restrictive to journalistic independence ahead of the 2027 elections.

The NBC had earlier issued guidelines cautioning broadcasters against biased reporting, intimidation of guests, and failure to maintain balance in political programming as election season approaches.
