Ok movement

Supporters of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally collapsed their separate political structures into a unified platform called the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, unveiling a coordinated national framework spanning all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The emergence of the movement was announced in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Justin Ijeh, describing the initiative as a coalition drawing from the Obidient Movement, the Kwankwasiyya, the New Nigeria People’s Party, and the African Democratic Congress. The group said it has appointed state and zonal coordinators to drive grassroots mobilisation across the country.

“Nigeria stands at a defining crossroads. Today, as our people endure the weight of unprecedented economic hardship, the soaring cost of living, and the persistent shadow of insecurity, the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement formally announces the unveiling of its national and state structures,” the statement read.

The movement framed its emergence not merely as a political event but as a response to national crisis, vowing to unite Nigerians across ethnic, regional and religious divides to confront hardship, restore accountable leadership, and drive what it described as a decisive national rebirth. “This is more than a political milestone; it is the birth of a coordinated, nationwide engine for systemic reform,” the statement added.

The OK Movement’s launch signals a fresh and significant layer of realignment within Nigeria’s opposition coalition and comes at a moment when permutations around the African Democratic Congress presidential ticket are intensifying rapidly. Both Obi and Kwankwaso are among the aspirants eyeing the ADC’s presidential ticket, alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement’s spokesperson Habib Mailemo has been vocal about the potential potency of an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance, arguing that only the two politicians command genuinely organic, grassroots followership that transcends party structures and financial inducement. He declared that a joint Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket would pose the most formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu in 2027, saying the incumbent’s re-election bid would be “dead on arrival” if both men align.

Reports have also emerged though as yet officially unconfirmed that Kwankwaso has agreed to serve as Obi’s running mate on a joint ticket. A political associate of Obi, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, claimed on Trust TV that both camps had reached an understanding, adding that supporters of both movements were already aware of the arrangement. However, fact-checkers have noted that no official confirmation has come from either Obi or Kwankwaso themselves, and the ADC has an end-of-May deadline to formally select its presidential candidate.

The launch of the OK Movement adds significant organisational weight to the speculation, with a formal coalition structure now in place to coordinate the combined support bases of two of the most popular grassroots political movements to emerge in Nigeria in recent years. In 2023, Obi and Kwankwaso ran separately and jointly secured over 7.5 million votes a combined figure that underscores the electoral arithmetic fuelling calls for a joint 2027 ticket.

As the ADC’s internal dynamics continue to evolve and the 2027 presidential race accelerates, the OK Movement’s emergence marks one of the more concrete developments yet in Nigeria’s shifting opposition landscape.
