Two Nigerians have reportedly been killed in South Africa as renewed xenophobic violence against African migrants escalates in parts of the country.
The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg confirmed the deaths on Monday, identifying the victims as Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew.
According to the report, the victims were allegedly killed by personnel of the South African National Defence Force in Port Elizabeth during ongoing unrest linked to anti-foreigner tensions.
Recent videos circulating online have shown violent scenes involving African migrants, sparking fears of another wave of xenophobic attacks similar to past incidents that strained diplomatic ties across the continent.
The Nigerian Embassy in South Africa had earlier issued a security advisory warning citizens of planned demonstrations in East London, Cape Town, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Province between Monday and Wednesday.
The latest killings are expected to trigger renewed calls for stronger protection of foreign nationals and urgent diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa.
