The Nigerian police have detained an Abuja-based shop owner, Love Dooshima, following a viral social media video in which she questioned the safety of a loaf of bread.

Ms Dooshima was reportedly invited by police operatives at the Zone 7 headquarters after a complaint was filed by a bread company over her review. She was subsequently detained for several hours before being released in the early hours of Tuesday after intervention by legal representatives and senior police authorities.

The controversy began after the businesswoman claimed in a viral video that a loaf of bread remained fresh on her shelf for up to two months an assertion that triggered widespread reactions online and raised concerns about food safety practices.

The company allegedly linked to the product, Bon Bread, denied the claims and maintained that its products meet regulatory standards. Its management argued that the viral video had negatively impacted its reputation and business operations.

Legal sources indicated that the shop owner honoured a police invitation regarding the complaint but was held in custody afterward, prompting public outcry and intervention from rights advocates.

Experts have also weighed in on the matter. A food science professor noted that under normal conditions, bread typically lasts only a few days without preservatives and at most two to three weeks with approved additives, casting doubt on claims of a two-month shelf life.

The incident has sparked broader debate about consumer rights, freedom of expression, and the role of law enforcement in disputes arising from online reviews.
