Manchester United moved a step closer to UEFA Champions League qualification after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Red Devils made a bright start and took the lead through Casemiro, who struck early to hand the home side control of the contest. United doubled their advantage before the break when Benjamin Sesko found the net to give the hosts a comfortable cushion.
Brentford pushed back in the closing stages and pulled one goal back through Mathias Jensen, but the visitors could not find an equaliser as United held firm for all three points.

The result leaves Manchester United firmly in third place and 11 points clear of sixth-placed Brighton, with the Premier League’s top five positions enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Interim manager Michael Carrick has continued to impress since taking charge in January, strengthening his case to be appointed permanently after steadying the club’s campaign.
United now turn attention to a huge clash against rivals Liverpool FC, a result that could further boost their hopes of sealing a top-three finish.
