Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has unveiled former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, promising a government built on partnership, inclusion, and shared decision-making.

Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja, Obi said an NDC administration would move away from the traditional structure where vice presidents play largely ceremonial roles. Instead, he pledged that Kwankwaso would be actively involved in governance and policy decisions.

According to Obi, the administration would operate on a model of collaboration, ensuring that key decisions are made through consultation and collective leadership. He emphasized that the vice president would not be treated as a “spare tyre” but as a genuine partner committed to advancing the country’s development agenda.

The former Anambra State governor said his choice of Kwankwaso was driven by their shared vision for Nigeria, particularly in the areas of education, security, economic growth, and social inclusion. He expressed confidence that their partnership would deliver meaningful reforms and help address some of the nation’s most pressing challenges.

Obi noted that both leaders are committed to building a more efficient government that prioritizes the welfare of citizens while reducing waste in public spending. He reiterated his earlier promise to serve only a single four-year term if elected, saying the focus would be on implementing critical reforms within that period.

Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate and influential political figure, remains one of the most prominent leaders in northern Nigeria. His selection is expected to strengthen the NDC’s political reach ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket brings together two politicians who played significant roles in the 2023 presidential race. Political observers believe the alliance could reshape the dynamics of the upcoming election by attracting support from diverse regions and voter groups across the country.

As the campaign season gradually takes shape, the NDC leadership says the new ticket represents a commitment to inclusive governance, national unity, and a renewed focus on development-driven leadership.
