Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election after securing a decisive victory in the party’s nationwide presidential primary.
According to the officially announced results, Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes out of the total votes cast to defeat his closest rival and former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who secured 504,117 votes. Another aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, finished with 177,120 votes.
The primary election, conducted across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards using the Option A4 voting system, marked one of the earliest major opposition contests ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Atiku’s victory further strengthens his position within the emerging opposition coalition gathering around the ADC platform.
However, the exercise was not without controversy. Both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly rejected aspects of the process, alleging widespread irregularities and voter disenfranchisement in several states. Hayatu-Deen, in particular, claimed that a large percentage of party members were prevented from participating in the exercise, raising fresh concerns over internal party management and transparency.
Despite the complaints, the party proceeded to officially declare Atiku winner of the primary, positioning him as ADC’s flag bearer for the next presidential race. Political analysts say the outcome may deepen ongoing debates within the opposition coalition, especially around zoning and power rotation between northern and southern Nigeria.
Atiku, who previously served as Nigeria’s Vice President between 1999 and 2007, has remained one of the country’s most prominent opposition figures over the years. He contested previous presidential elections under different political parties and joined the ADC as part of broader political realignments ahead of 2027.
The emergence of Atiku as ADC’s candidate also sets the stage for what could become a highly competitive election cycle involving President Bola Tinubu and other opposition contenders expected to emerge in the coming months. Political activities have intensified in recent weeks as major parties begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 polls.
With the ADC primary now concluded, attention is expected to shift toward coalition negotiations, campaign strategies and the broader opposition battle for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.
