Super-Eagles

Nigeria’s Super Eagles stepped into familiar territory on Tuesday evening as they opened their 2026 Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe’s Warriors at The Valley stadium in Charlton, south-east London.

The Super Eagles, defending champions of the four-nation tournament, came into the tie without a win in their last three meetings against Zimbabwe, with all encounters ending in 1-1 draws, including both legs of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Coach Eric Chelle opted to include seven players from the Nigerian local league while also handing maiden call-ups to Arthur Okonkwo and Femi Azeez, viewing the tournament as a platform for new talents to make their case ahead of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

Chelle made no secret of his respect for the opposition. “Zimbabwe is a great team with strong players. They come with a lot of motivation. They want to win,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

The Warriors were expected to sit deep, frustrate Nigeria in midfield and exploit transitions, a pattern that has troubled the Super Eagles in recent years.
Nigeria won the 2025 edition of the Unity Cup after defeating Jamaica 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium. A victory over Zimbabwe would set up a final appearance against either India or Jamaica on May 30.
