The founder and General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), HRM King Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, has offered free accommodation in Port Harcourt to Nigerian returnees displaced by the recent wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Apostle Chinyere made the announcement on Friday at his residence in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Port Harcourt, disclosing that he had already paid for a mini estate to house affected Nigerians who choose to return home.
The cleric said he was deeply shaken by a viral video showing the brutal murder of a Nigerian by South African nationals, a sight he described as deeply traumatising.
“I watched a video last week of how a Nigerian living in South Africa was beaten to death by a South African. I could not sleep since that day, Because of that, I told my agent to look for a house, and they found one. I have paid for it today. It is a mini estate.” – he said
The recent surge in xenophobic violence across South Africa has left many Nigerians and their businesses exposed to threats, destruction and deep uncertainty, forcing hundreds to consider abandoning livelihoods built over decades.
Beyond accommodation, King Chinyere pledged comprehensive support for affected families, including one meal per day, seed capital to start petty businesses, and enrolment of their children in any of OPM’s 43 tuition-free schools.
“Your life, your wife and your children are important, We will feed you once per day while you are living in the free estate. We could have said let us feed you three times a day, but it is not possible because we are already feeding thousands of people every day. For your wife, we will start a small business for her. For your children, we will enrol all of them in one of the OPM 43 free schools to continue their education.” He added
Apostle Chinyere acknowledged that many Nigerians had been reluctant to return home owing to fears of starting over with nothing no housing, no livelihood and no clear path forward. He sought to address those concerns directly.
“I am aware that all your businesses, all your houses, everything is in South Africa, so you are coming back with nothing, But by the grace of God, we will support you. We will teach you skills. We have a multi-skills acquisition centre where we can equip you for a new beginning.” He stated
The clergyman expressed optimism that the returnees would recover, urging them not to lose hope.
“All hope is not lost. It does not matter what you are going through in South Africa, it is not over for you. You will bounce back. God will restore you,” he said.
King Chinyere also appealed to the Federal Government to fund return flight tickets for Nigerians wishing to come home, noting that while the church would ordinarily have taken on that responsibility, the scale of its ongoing welfare programmes made it financially impractical to add international airfare to its commitments.
He further called on Air Peace airline to deploy an aircraft to evacuate willing returnees from South Africa to Nigeria at no cost.
This is not the first time Apostle Chinyere has stepped in where government response has fallen short. Following the murder of Deborah Samuel several years ago, a case that attracted national outrage and demands for federal intervention, it was the OPM founder who relocated her family to Port Harcourt, purchased a 14-unit mini estate for them, established a business for her parents and offered scholarships to her siblings.
Funded through tithes and offerings, Apostle Chinyere’s ministry has to date established 43 tuition-free schools, two specialist hospitals offering free medical care, 18 free housing estates, a skills acquisition centre, and has awarded more than 10,000 local and overseas scholarships to underprivileged Nigerians.
