The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has congratulated the government and people of Abia State on the 35th anniversary of the state, commending its record of peace, improved security and democratic development.
Abia was created on August 27, 1991, by the administration of the then military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, following its separation from the old Imo State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, said the relative peace and security enjoyed by the state remained important foundations for economic growth, investment and development.
The Deputy Speaker also acknowledged the contributions of successive military and civilian administrations to the development of Abia, stressing that the progress recorded over the years was the result of the collective efforts of past and present leaders, institutions and citizens.
Kalu commended the administration of Governor Alex Otti for its focus on security and good governance, particularly the establishment of an Air Force Office in Umuahia, the state capital.
He further praised the state government for encouraging bipartisan cooperation, citing the approval of Certificates of Occupancy for federal projects and initiatives, including the Industrial Court, Renewed Hope Housing Projects and newly approved federal educational institutions in Abia.
According to him, the projects, alongside other expected developments, have the potential to attract investments, create employment opportunities and expand infrastructure across the state.
Kalu said sustained cooperation between the federal and state governments would be crucial to accelerating Abia’s development trajectory.
He also welcomed reported efforts toward the payment of outstanding pensions and gratuities, describing the welfare of retired workers as a responsibility government must continue to uphold in recognition of their service to the state.
“Abia at 35 is a story of resilience and progress. I commend the governments, present and previous administrations, for their efforts aimed at developing our dear state and urge us to sustain the momentum of peace, unity and service delivery,” he said.
Kalu wished Abians a successful 35th anniversary celebration and urged citizens to remain committed to the peace, unity and development of the state.
