United Bank for Africa Plc has announced a leadership transition at the top of its board, with Tony Elumelu stepping down as chairman and Ugo Nwaghodoh Nnorom taking over the position.

The change marks a new chapter for one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions as Nnorom assumes responsibility for providing strategic oversight of the pan-African banking group.

Elumelu, who has been chairman of UBA for several years, played a prominent role in shaping the bank’s growth and strengthening its position across Africa.

Under his leadership, UBA continued to expand its operations beyond Nigeria while deepening its presence in major African markets and strengthening its international footprint.

His tenure also coincided with significant developments in the Nigerian banking industry, including regulatory reforms, increased digitalisation and growing competition within the financial services sector.

The appointment of Nnorom is expected to provide continuity while bringing fresh leadership to the board at a time when the banking industry is undergoing rapid transformation.

Nnorom brings extensive experience in banking, finance and corporate governance to the position. His appointment is expected to strengthen the board’s capacity to guide the institution through an increasingly competitive financial environment.

The new chairman will be responsible for working with the board and management to sustain UBA’s growth strategy, improve shareholder value and support the bank’s long-term objectives.

UBA has built a significant presence across Africa, with operations extending to several countries and financial centres, making the chairman’s role critical to the bank’s regional expansion strategy.

The leadership transition also comes as financial institutions across Africa increasingly invest in digital banking, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and innovative financial products to meet changing customer demands.

For UBA, maintaining strong corporate governance and ensuring sustainable growth will remain key priorities as the bank continues to compete in Nigeria and other African markets.

Elumelu’s departure from the chairmanship does not mark an end to his relationship with the financial institution. His influence remains closely associated with UBA’s evolution into a major pan-African banking group.

The bank is expected to leverage the experience of both its board and management as it moves into the next phase of its growth.

Nnorom’s assumption of office therefore represents both continuity and transition, with the new chairman expected to build on the foundations established under Elumelu while helping the institution navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead.

The development is likely to attract attention across Nigeria’s financial sector, given UBA’s size, regional footprint and importance to the country’s banking industry.
