Former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland star Damien Duff has secured his first coaching role in the Premier League after being appointed assistant manager of Brentford ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The 47-year-old joins the coaching staff led by fellow Irishman and former international teammate Keith Andrews, marking a new chapter in his managerial journey.
Duff arrives at Brentford following a successful spell with Shelbourne FC, where he guided the club to its first League of Ireland title in 18 years during the 2024 campaign. Despite stepping down after the following season, his work earned widespread praise and strengthened his reputation as one of Ireland’s most promising young coaches.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews welcomed Duff’s arrival, highlighting the former winger’s wealth of experience, tactical knowledge, and attention to detail. Andrews believes Duff’s presence will add significant value to the club’s coaching setup as the Bees look to build on their impressive ninth-place finish last season.
As a player, Duff enjoyed an outstanding career, winning two Premier League titles and a League Cup with Chelsea under legendary manager José Mourinho. He also featured for Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, Fulham, and Melbourne City while earning more than 100 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Since retiring from professional football, Duff has steadily built his coaching credentials through roles with Shamrock Rovers, the Republic of Ireland national team setup, Celtic, and Shelbourne. His move to Brentford now provides him with an opportunity to test himself at the highest level of English football.
The appointment reunites two respected figures in Irish football and could prove to be one of the Premier League’s most intriguing coaching partnerships as Brentford prepare for the new campaign.
