Abia Secures Landmark Convictions as Two Child Sex Offenders Get 30, 10 Years in Prison

The Abia State Government has recorded another major milestone in its campaign against sexual and gender-based violence, securing the conviction of two child sex offenders who were sentenced to 30 years and 10 years’ imprisonment respectively for separate cases of child defilement.

The landmark convictions reinforce the administration of Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to protecting women, children and other vulnerable residents while sending a clear message that perpetrators of sexual offences will be relentlessly pursued and made to face the full weight of the law.

One of the convicts, a 35-year-old man from Akwa Ibom State, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by the Family Court sitting at the High Court in Umuahia after being found guilty of defiling a five-year-old girl. In a separate case, a 32-year-old man received 30 years’ imprisonment for defiling a 13-year-old girl.

The development was announced by the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, following this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Otti.

Describing the convictions as a significant victory in the state’s fight against sexual violence, Prince Kanu said the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of sexual abuse and exploitation.

He explained that the convictions rank among the notable achievements of the state’s Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) located at the General Hospital, Aba. The centre provides coordinated medical care, psychosocial support, counselling and referral services to survivors while working with relevant agencies to ensure offenders are prosecuted.

Prince Kanu also disclosed that the centre is currently handling two additional cases involving the alleged gang rape of a 60-year-old woman and the defilement of a five-year-old child, assuring residents that justice would be pursued in both matters.

Beyond the fight against sexual violence, the commissioner highlighted the humanitarian interventions of the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, noting that vulnerable residents continue to receive medical, financial and social support under the state’s social protection framework.

He revealed that government officials recently visited the family of the late Wendy Achumba, an indigent woman from Obingwa Local Government Area who was allegedly raped and murdered in Imo State. According to him, representatives of the state government attended her burial, provided financial assistance to the bereaved family and assured them that efforts would continue to ensure justice is served.

Providing further insight into the convictions, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, disclosed that the offender who received a 10-year prison sentence fled to Nasarawa State after committing the offence but was tracked down by the Nigeria Police Force and returned to Abia State to face trial.

Mrs. Felix described the speed of the prosecution as unprecedented within Nigeria’s network of Sexual Assault Referral Centres, noting that one of the convictions was secured within 24 hours after the matter was first called in court.

She attributed the swift convictions to the collaboration between the Ministries of Health, Justice, Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, alongside the Nigeria Police Force, which ensured the cases were diligently investigated and prosecuted without unnecessary delay.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Otti administration’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable citizens and maintaining a firm zero-tolerance stance against sexual and gender-based violence.

She also disclosed that Abia State maintains a Sex Offenders Register at the Ministry of Justice, where the names of convicted sexual offenders are recorded as a deterrent to future offenders.

The convictions are being widely hailed as a major boost to Abia State’s efforts to strengthen child protection, reinforce public confidence in the justice system and demonstrate that crimes of sexual violence will be met with swift investigation, prosecution and punishment.
