Abia State Labour Party Condemns “Illegal” NEC Meeting, Reaffirms Support for Julius Abure

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has issued a strongly worded statement denouncing what it described as an “illegal” National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and the subsequent announcement of an interim National Working Committee (NWC).

In a press release signed by the Acting State Secretary, Hon. John Onyekachi Igbojionu, the state chapter expressed dismay over what it called a “sacrilegious outing” allegedly orchestrated by certain suspended members of the party, alongside unnamed individuals seeking to create division and disunity within the party ranks.

Describing the meeting as a “charade,” the Abia Labour Party declared its outcome null and void from inception, insisting that the state chapter remains firmly loyal to the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure, who heads the party’s recognized National Working Committee.

“We completely dissociate ourselves from that inglorious outing and urge all our members to disregard any directives issued from such illegal gatherings,” the statement read.

The party further advised that Abia State’s resources and attention should be directed toward projects that positively impact the lives of citizens, rather than being diverted by internal political distractions.

Quoting specific provisions of the Labour Party Constitution, the statement emphasized that only the National Secretary, in consultation with the National Chairman, has the authority to convene a NEC meeting. Additionally, it maintained that the creation of any ad-hoc or standing committees falls solely within the purview of the legitimate NEC.

Reiterating the Supreme Court’s April 4th judgment affirming Barr. Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman, the Abia chapter emphasized that there is “absolutely no vacancy” in the party’s national leadership.

The statement concluded with a call to those behind the disputed meeting to either respect the verdict of the apex court or seek an alternative political platform for their ambitions.
