Argentina’s President has paid glowing tribute to football legend Lionel Messi following the country’s defeat to Spain in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the President praised Messi for his extraordinary contribution to Argentine football, describing him as a source of national pride whose legacy transcends trophies and results.

In his message, the President thanked the Argentine captain for his years of dedication, leadership and commitment to the national team, noting that Messi has inspired millions of Argentines and football fans around the world.

He stressed that while the World Cup final ended in disappointment, Messi’s achievements remain unmatched, highlighting his role in leading Argentina to numerous successes, including the country’s World Cup triumph four years earlier.

The President also applauded the entire Argentine squad for their resilience and determination throughout the tournament, saying they represented the nation with honour, courage and passion.

Argentina reached the final after an impressive campaign but fell short against a disciplined Spanish side, who claimed the world title with a composed display.

Although the defeat denied Argentina back-to-back World Cup titles, tributes have continued to pour in for Messi, with many describing the 39-year-old captain as one of the greatest footballers in history and celebrating the remarkable career that has defined a generation of the sport.
