Rev. Uma Ukpai statue

The Asaga Ohafia community in Abia State has immortalised late Rev. Uma Ukpai with a statue, in recognition of his enduring contributions to spiritual growth and community development.

The statue, erected by the Asaga Ohafia Development Union (ADU), stands at Onuogo Eziukwu Village Square identified as the site where the late cleric initiated the Asaga Solemn Assembly.

Rev. Ukpai, a renowned evangelist, was laid to rest on 26 March 2026.

Speaking on the development, the union’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Stanley Mba, said the decision to honour the cleric was driven by his extensive impact on the community.

He described the late preacher as “God’s General,” citing his decades-long evangelism, philanthropic activities, and investments in local development.

According to Mr Mba, the statue was sculpted by Chief Sculptor Chikezie Ukaha, who also serves as the union’s First Vice President and President of the Ohafia Improvement Union, Umuahia Branch.

He noted that the monument serves as a lasting reminder of Rev. Ukpai’s roots in Asaga Ohafia and the deep affection the community holds for him.

Born in 1945, Rev. Ukpai was widely regarded as more than a religious leader. Community leaders say he provided free medical outreaches across villages, offering both healthcare and spiritual support to residents.

He was also credited with organising youth football competitions aimed at discouraging crime and nurturing talent, as well as founding the annual Asaga Solemn Assembly held every 1 January.

The initiative, according to stakeholders, contributed significantly to the spiritual, social, and economic development of the community.

Mr Mba further highlighted infrastructural contributions linked to the late cleric, including the establishment of a hospital and a polytechnic, which he said continue to benefit residents.

He added that the union remains committed to sustaining Rev. Ukpai’s vision and legacy.

“The impact made by the revered preacher will be felt for generations,” Mr Mba said, noting that the community would continue to build on the foundation he laid.
