Comedian and actor AY Makun has expressed outrage over a doctored video circulating online that falsely portrays him kissing actress May Edochie. The manipulated footage, allegedly created using Artificial Intelligence (AI), surfaced shortly after AY posted a clip of himself and May traveling to the UK for the promotion of his latest film, The Waiter.
In response to the viral controversy, the award-winning filmmaker took to Instagram to denounce the misuse of AI for spreading misinformation and tarnishing reputations.
“Why are young, talented Nigerians using their creative skills for harmful purposes instead of positive innovation?” he questioned. “This technology should be a tool for development, not destruction.”
The Rise of AI Misinformation in Nigerian Media
AY drew parallels to a recent incident involving reality star Alex Asogwa, who was also targeted by online misinformation. He highlighted the growing concern over how AI-generated content is being weaponized to fuel negativity and create chaos.
“We need to channel this AI expertise into something meaningful—something that uplifts us as a nation and promotes progress,” AY urged.
He further called on Nigerians to embrace unity and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of supporting each other’s aspirations and celebrating individual achievements.
Personal Challenges Amid Public Scrutiny
The controversy comes at a time when both AY Makun and May Edochie are navigating personal challenges. Reports suggest turmoil in AY’s 20-year marriage to his wife Mabel, while May continues to face marital issues with her estranged husband, actor Yul Edochie.
Despite these personal struggles, AY remains focused on his professional projects and advocacy for positive use of technology. His stance against AI-generated misinformation serves as a reminder of the need for responsible digital practices in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

As digital media continues to evolve, public figures and content creators must remain vigilant, pushing for ethical standards and responsible innovation in Nigeria’s entertainment and media spaces.
