Senegal vs Morocco

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has expressed confidence in its ability to resolve the ongoing dispute surrounding the controversial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

CAS Director General, Matthieu Reeb, assured that the global arbitration body is well-equipped to handle complex football disputes of this nature, as attention shifts to a final ruling on the highly contested outcome.

The dispute stems from the chaotic AFCON 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco, initially won 1–0 by Senegal on the pitch before being overturned by the Confederation of African Football Appeal Board. The board later ruled that Senegal forfeited the match, awarding a 3–0 victory and the title to Morocco.

Senegal’s football authorities have rejected the decision, describing it as unjust and unprecedented, and have since escalated the matter to CAS for independent review.

The controversy traces back to dramatic scenes during the final in Rabat, where Senegalese players temporarily walked off the pitch in protest over contentious officiating decisions, including a disputed penalty call.

CAF’s ruling invoked competition regulations on misconduct and match forfeiture, but the decision has drawn widespread criticism and raised concerns about governance and consistency in African football.

With both sides now submitting their cases, CAS is expected to deliver a verdict in the coming months, a decision that could ultimately determine the official winner of AFCON 2025 and set a precedent for future disputes in the sport.

For now, the final chapter of one of Africa’s most controversial football matches will be decided not on the pitch, but in the courtroom.
