Plans for the proposed Obeaku Seaport in Abia State have gained momentum as a technical team from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) commenced feasibility and hydrographic surveys in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
The survey marks a significant step toward the realization of the seaport project, which is expected to transform Abia into a major maritime and commercial hub in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The CHEC team, accompanied by senior officials of the Abia State Government, visited Obeaku to assess the waterways and carry out critical bathymetric and navigational studies. The exercise is aimed at determining the technical and economic viability of the proposed seaport.
China Harbour Engineering Company is renowned for delivering major infrastructure projects globally, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port, one of Nigeria’s most significant maritime developments.
Speaking during the visit, the Aku of Obeaku Kingdom, His Royal Highness Eze Ikeagwuchi Ekeke, reaffirmed the community’s commitment to the project. He noted that the community had already donated more than 2,000 plots of land to support the development and pledged continued cooperation with investors and government authorities.
The traditional ruler also emphasized that the facility should officially be known as the Obeaku Seaport, insisting that the host community’s identity should be fully reflected in the project’s naming and branding.
Government officials described the commencement of the survey as a major milestone in the state’s efforts to expand its economic base and attract large-scale investments. They expressed optimism that the seaport would stimulate industrial growth, create employment opportunities, improve logistics, and boost regional trade.
When completed, the Obeaku Seaport is expected to enhance maritime activities in the South-East, reduce pressure on existing ports, and position Abia as a strategic gateway for commerce and international trade.
Stakeholders believe the project could become one of the most transformative infrastructure developments in the region, opening new opportunities for economic growth and attracting both local and foreign investment.
