** The Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development has strongly opposed recent calls for a state of emergency in Zamfara State, dismissing them as unconstitutional and politically motivated.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Alhaji Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, the group argued that Zamfara has made significant security progress under Governor Dauda Lawal, making any attempt to impose emergency rule both unlawful and unnecessary.

A Politically Motivated Agenda?

The civic group attributed the push for a state of emergency to politicians seeking to destabilize the state for personal gains. It called on President Bola Tinubu to dismiss these calls, citing his commitment to democracy and constitutional governance.

Referring to a Supreme Court ruling that prohibits the suspension of elected officials under a state of emergency, the group emphasized that Zamfara does not meet the constitutional criteria for such a declaration as outlined in Sections 188 and 305 of the 1999 Constitution.

Security Progress Undermines Justification for Emergency Rule

Commending President Tinubu and the Nigerian military for their recent security achievements in Zamfara, the group highlighted that peace and stability have enabled economic and infrastructural development, further rendering a state of emergency unnecessary.

The statement alleged that some “failed politicians” are sponsoring protests and spreading false narratives to advance their self-serving political interests.

“If insecurity were the justification for declaring a state of emergency, then similar measures would be required across many parts of the country,” the statement argued.

Call for Unity and Focus on Development

Urging political stakeholders to prioritize development over political rivalry, the group reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, and democracy.

The statement reads:

“Calls for a state of emergency in Zamfara State are reckless and politically driven. Security has improved, and further destabilization would harm ongoing progress.

Some failed politicians are sponsoring protests to push this agenda, despite the state’s recovery from years of banditry. Their motives should be investigated.

The Constitution does not allow for the removal of elected officials under a state of emergency. The Supreme Court has affirmed this.

We commend President Tinubu and the military for their efforts in restoring security. Governance, not political distractions, should be the focus.

Zamfara needs rebuilding, not disruption. We urge all stakeholders to support progress rather than fuel division.

Our commitment remains to peace, unity, and democracy. We reject any action that undermines the Constitution or national stability.”

With security conditions improving, the group insists that Zamfara’s focus should be on rebuilding, governance, and long-term stability—not political maneuvering.
