The Upper Area Court 2 sitting in Otukpo, Benue State, has remanded a former councillor, Daniel Ujah, at the Otukpo Correctional Centre over allegations that he assaulted a woman and pushed her into a fire.
Ujah, 43, who previously represented Awume-Icho Ward in Ohimini Local Government Area, was arraigned by the Nigeria Police on charges bordering on criminal trespass, intimidation, criminal force and assault, causing grievous hurt, and attempted culpable homicide. (Punch Newspapers)
The case, marked CR33/2026, followed a petition reportedly submitted by Rebecca Adole at the Area Commander’s Office of the Nigeria Police in Otukpo.
According to the First Information Report presented before the court, the alleged incident occurred on August 28, 2026, at Akwutulo, Awume, in Ohimini LGA.
The police alleged that Ujah entered the compound of Adole’s mother, Amina Iduh, and assaulted her after she returned from the farm.
The prosecution further alleged that the former councillor pushed the woman into a fire, leaving her with injuries while her clothes were also burnt.
Iduh was subsequently taken to a hospital in Onyagede, Ohimini LGA, for medical treatment, according to the police report. (The Guardian Nigeria)
The police also accused Ujah of threatening to kill the woman, allegedly telling her that nobody could stop him.
When the matter came up for mention on Wednesday, Ujah pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His counsel, Rev. O. Simon, who held brief for P.O. Ella, applied for bail on behalf of the defendant.
The prosecution counsel, Inspector Nancy Alechenu, however, opposed the bail application.
In her ruling, the presiding magistrate, Hasia Garuba, ordered that Ujah be remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The court subsequently adjourned the case until September 22, 2026, for further mention.
Ujah’s remand is not a conviction. He has pleaded not guilty, and the allegations against him remain subject to determination by the court.
