The Emir of Argungu, Muhammad Samaila-Mera, has called on communities to legally acquire arms and strengthen local security measures to protect themselves against persistent attacks by bandits and other criminal elements.

The traditional ruler made the appeal during a meeting with district, village, and ward heads in Argungu, where he expressed concern over the growing security challenges facing rural communities. He urged residents to become more proactive in safeguarding their lives and property while working closely with security agencies.

According to the emir, communities should intensify intelligence gathering and promptly share useful information with law enforcement authorities to help combat insecurity. He emphasized that vigilance and cooperation with security agencies remain critical in addressing the threat posed by bandits and terrorists.

The monarch also encouraged residents to collectively mobilize resources to obtain government-approved weapons for lawful self-defence. He argued that communities with the capacity to defend themselves could discourage attacks by criminal groups and reduce their vulnerability.

He noted that many communities have become easy targets because they lack the means and organization necessary to resist attacks. The emir maintained that self-defence, when carried out within the limits of the law, is a legitimate response to the security threats confronting many parts of the country.

The remarks come amid continued concerns over banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks in several northern communities. Stakeholders have increasingly called for stronger security measures, improved intelligence gathering, and greater collaboration between residents and security agencies to curb criminal activities.

The emir’s comments have generated discussions on community security and the role of self-defence in addressing insecurity, with many observers emphasizing the need for any such measures to remain within the framework of Nigerian law.
