The Federal Government has announced plans to allow journalists to accompany military personnel during selected operations as part of efforts to improve transparency, enhance public understanding of security operations, and strengthen cooperation between the armed forces and the media.

The initiative was unveiled by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a meeting with media executives and military officials. He said the programme is designed to give journalists firsthand access to military operations and enable more accurate reporting on the country’s security situation.

According to the minister, the move will help bridge the information gap between security agencies and the public while countering misinformation and disinformation surrounding military operations.

Idris stressed that journalists participating in the programme would be embedded with troops under clearly defined operational guidelines to ensure their safety and the security of ongoing missions.

He noted that the collaboration is expected to foster greater trust between the military, the media, and the public by providing authentic accounts of security efforts across various conflict zones.

The minister also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to press freedom and responsible journalism, urging media practitioners to continue supporting national security through accurate, balanced, and ethical reporting.

Military authorities welcomed the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to showcase the professionalism and sacrifices of Nigerian troops engaged in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats across the country.

The proposed programme is expected to commence after the development of operational procedures and safety protocols for participating journalists.
