The Federal Government has condemned the killing of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa and called on the South African authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed deep concern over the deaths and described the incidents as unacceptable, particularly amid rising tensions and anti-immigrant sentiments in parts of South Africa.
The government said the killings have heightened fears among Nigerians living in South Africa and raised fresh concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in the country. It warned against the deliberate targeting and stereotyping of Nigerians and other migrants as criminals.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens abroad and urged South African authorities to take decisive measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of all residents regardless of nationality.
The latest deaths occurred against the backdrop of renewed anti-immigrant protests in South Africa, which have prompted several countries, including Nigeria, to evacuate willing nationals from the country. Reports indicate that hundreds of Nigerians have already returned home under voluntary evacuation arrangements.
The Nigerian government stressed that justice must be served and called for strengthened cooperation between both countries to address the concerns of affected communities and preserve the longstanding diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also assured Nigerians in South Africa that the government remains actively engaged with the South African authorities and will continue to monitor developments while taking necessary steps to safeguard the lives and interests of its citizens.
