The United Kingdom Government has donated modern DNA forensic equipment to the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen criminal investigations and improve the country’s capacity to fight crime.
The equipment was presented to the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja by a UK delegation led by Professor Ukoha Ukwo under the Commonwealth and Development Office’s SPRING Programme.
The items were received on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the FCID, Ihebom Chukwuma.
The donation is part of the longstanding partnership between the UK Government and the Nigeria Police in forensic science, criminal investigation, capacity development and the use of modern policing technology.
Speaking during the presentation, Chukwuma described the intervention as a major boost to the police force’s forensic capabilities.
He said the equipment would enable investigators to conduct more scientific and accurate examinations, particularly in the processing and analysis of DNA evidence.
According to the police, the technology will assist investigators in identifying suspects and victims, establishing links between individuals and crime scenes, and providing scientific evidence for criminal proceedings.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Forensic Section, Agbo Benedict, also commended the UK Government for its continued support towards strengthening forensic investigation and Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
Benedict acknowledged previous support and capacity-building initiatives provided by the UK, while appreciating the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the SPRING Programme for their latest intervention.
The Nigeria Police Force said it would continue to strengthen partnerships with local and international stakeholders as part of efforts to build a modern and professional police institution capable of tackling emerging security challenges.
