The Federal Government is reportedly considering appointing former governors Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, along with Senator Shehu Sani and former presidential aide Reno Omokri, as ambassadors.
According to sources, their credentials have been submitted to security agencies for background checks, a standard procedure before official announcements.
This development follows the recall of Nigeria’s ambassadors nearly two years ago, which left numerous diplomatic positions vacant and raised concerns about the country’s international representation.
The delay in appointing new ambassadors has been attributed to financial constraints and the need for thorough vetting processes.
A government official, speaking anonymously, indicated that the list of nominees would be released once security clearances are obtained. The official expressed optimism that the appointments would be finalized before the end of the month.

Ugwuanyi, Ikpeazu, Shehu Sani, others screened for ambassadorial appointment
The absence of ambassadors has reportedly impacted Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements, as chargé d’affaires managing the missions lack the authority to engage at the highest levels with host nations.
The anticipated appointments aim to restore full diplomatic representation and enhance Nigeria’s foreign relations.
