Police officers in Abuja have used tear gas to disperse protesters gathered in the Maitama district on Monday, April 7, 2025.
The demonstrators, comprising members of the #TakeItBack movement and several civil society organizations, were calling for a review of the Cybercrime Act, a response to the country’s deteriorating economic conditions, and increased attention to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

The protest initially remained peaceful, with participants holding placards bearing messages such as “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe.” Tensions escalated, however, when security forces deployed tear gas canisters into the crowd, triggering panic and forcing many to flee.
Notable figures at the protest included human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who joined in solidarity with the demonstrators.
Juwon Sanyaolu, National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, said the rally was organized to challenge what he described as growing authoritarian tendencies within the current administration, and to demand urgent economic relief for struggling Nigerians.

As of the time of reporting, there were no confirmed arrests or injuries, though the security presence in the capital remains heightened and the situation tense.
