Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their quarter-final clash on Sunday.
The result brought an abrupt end to Nigeria’s campaign and ended their hopes of successfully defending the continental title they won at the previous edition.
The highly anticipated encounter between two of Africa’s traditional women’s football powerhouses was decided by a single goal, with Cameroon securing a place in the semi-finals at Nigeria’s expense.
The defeat is particularly disappointing for the Super Falcons, who entered the knockout stage as defending champions and were expected to mount another serious challenge for the title.
Cameroon Strike First
Cameroon took the lead in the first half through a well-taken free-kick from Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen, who found the breakthrough in the 19th minute.
The goal gave the Indomitable Lionesses the advantage and forced Nigeria to chase the game for the remainder of the encounter.
Despite their efforts to find an equaliser, the Super Falcons were unable to breach the Cameroonian defence before the final whistle.
The result means Cameroon advance to the last four, while Nigeria’s quest for another African title comes to an end.

Nigeria’s WAFCON Campaign Ends
The Super Falcons’ journey to the quarter-finals had been a mixture of disappointment and recovery.
After suffering defeat in their opening group match against Malawi, Nigeria responded strongly with victories over Zambia and Egypt to secure their place in the knockout stage.
Their campaign, however, has now ended at the quarter-final stage.
For Cameroon, the victory provides an opportunity to continue their pursuit of the continental crown, while Nigeria must now turn their attention towards securing a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup and rebuilding ahead of future international competitions.
The defeat also means the Super Falcons will surrender the WAFCON crown they won at the previous edition.
For one of Africa’s most decorated women’s football nations, the immediate task will be to learn from the disappointment, address the weaknesses exposed during the tournament and begin preparations for the next generation of continental and global competitions.
