Nigeria’s Super Falcons have arrived in Casablanca, Morocco, ahead of their crucial 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final against Cameroon on Sunday.
The defending champions secured their place in the last eight after producing a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C fixture. The result helped Nigeria recover from their disappointing opening defeat to Malawi and finish second in the group.
The Nigerian team travelled to Casablanca on Friday as preparations intensified for what promises to be a highly competitive West African showdown.
The quarter-final will take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, with kick-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. GMT (6:00 p.m. Nigerian time) on Sunday, August 9.
Falcons Carry Winning Momentum
Nigeria enters the knockout stage with renewed confidence following the emphatic victory over Egypt.
After suffering a surprise defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening match, the Super Falcons responded with a narrow 1-0 victory over Zambia, courtesy of Asisat Oshoala, before completing their group-stage campaign with the six-goal demolition of Egypt.
The victory over Egypt was particularly important for the defending champions, who needed a strong result to secure their progression to the knockout stage.
Nigeria’s attacking display also demonstrated the team’s ability to respond under pressure, with the Falcons scoring six goals against an Egyptian side that struggled to contain their attacking movement.
Cameroon Await in Casablanca
Standing between Nigeria and a place in the semi-finals are the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon.
The two sides are familiar opponents in African women’s football, with their meetings traditionally producing fiercely contested encounters.
Cameroon secured their quarter-final place after finishing among the top two teams in their group, setting up another heavyweight African women’s football clash with Nigeria.
The fixture is arguably one of the most anticipated quarter-final matches of the tournament, given the history and rivalry between the two nations.
World Cup Qualification Also at Stake
Beyond progression to the WAFCON semi-finals, Sunday’s encounter carries an even bigger incentive.
The four teams that win their respective quarter-final matches will automatically qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Teams that lose in the quarter-finals will have another opportunity to qualify through subsequent play-off routes.
For Nigeria, therefore, victory over Cameroon would secure both a place in the WAFCON semi-finals and qualification for another Women’s World Cup.
Defending Champions Under Pressure
The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, having won the competition 10 times.
They are also the defending champions after winning the previous edition, making expectations particularly high as they continue their title defence.
The team’s journey to Casablanca has, however, not been straightforward.
The defeat to Malawi immediately placed pressure on the Falcons, forcing them to respond strongly in their remaining group matches. Their victories over Zambia and Egypt have since restored confidence around the squad.
Coach Justin Madugu will now be hoping his players can maintain the attacking intensity displayed against Egypt while avoiding the defensive lapses that allowed the Malawians to cause an upset in Nigeria’s opening fixture.
Nigeria vs Cameroon: A Battle for the Last Four
With a semi-final place and World Cup qualification at stake, Sunday’s encounter is expected to be played at a high intensity.
For Nigeria, another victory would keep alive their ambition of retaining the African title and extending their dominance of women’s football on the continent.
For Cameroon, defeating the defending champions would represent a major statement and provide a pathway to the final stages of the competition.
The Super Falcons have now settled in Casablanca and will turn their attention to final preparations as they seek to overcome Cameroon and continue their quest for another continental crown.
