Illegal Miners Kill NSCDC Officer During Enforcement Operation in Niger

A personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been killed during an enforcement operation against illegal mining activities in Niger State after suspected illegal miners allegedly attacked security operatives.

The incident occurred during a routine patrol by the NSCDC Mining Marshals, who had reportedly acted on intelligence indicating that illegal mining operations were being carried out in the area, including activities conducted at night.

According to the NSCDC, the operatives encountered resistance while attempting to halt the illegal mining activities, leading to an armed confrontation with the suspects.

During the exchange, one officer sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The Corps described the attack as a coordinated and unprovoked assault carried out by suspected illegal miners and their collaborators in an attempt to evade arrest and frustrate the enforcement operation.

Reinforcements were subsequently deployed to the scene to restore order and secure the area while investigations commenced into the circumstances surrounding the deadly attack.

The NSCDC expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its officer, describing him as a dedicated personnel who paid the ultimate price while carrying out his lawful duty to protect the nation’s mineral resources and enforce existing mining regulations.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for those responsible for the attack, with investigations continuing to identify and apprehend all suspects connected to the incident.

The killing has renewed concerns over the increasing dangers faced by security personnel combating illegal mining across Nigeria, where criminal networks often operate with sophisticated weapons and violently resist enforcement operations.

The Federal Government has repeatedly pledged to intensify efforts to curb illegal mining, warning that the illicit activities not only deprive the country of valuable revenue but also fuel insecurity, environmental degradation and organised crime in mining communities.
