In a politically charged moment that has sparked conversations across Nigeria’s political landscape, the Senate President made a bold revelation during a passionate speech at the APC National summit 2027, saying that a Labour Party senator was so eager to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that he was “dragging” the Senate President’s clothing, begging to be taken along and was ultimately told to wait outside in his car.
“As I was leaving, one senator was dragging my dress today. He said, ‘Please take me there.’ I said, ‘You can’t come now.’ And he is a Labour party Senator. I don’t want to mention his name… I said, ‘Wait outside in my car,’” the Senate President disclosed.
This dramatic account came amid a broader, fiery endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where the Senate President lauded the administration’s achievements and political strength despite the economic and social challenges facing the country.
Calling on the Speaker of the House, Deputy Senate President, and principal officers of the National Assembly, the Senate President stressed that it was their responsibility to acknowledge both the strengths and shortcomings of the presidency. However, instead of criticism, he delivered a vote of confidence in Tinubu’s leadership.
“If this President has done well, is it not us that will say so? If he has not done well, is it not us that will give him notice of impeachment? We are not giving him notice of impeachment. We are giving him notice that though 2023 was difficult, in 2027, I see everything turning around.”
He went further, emphasizing Tinubu’s political “sagacity” and ability to steer Nigeria toward recovery and growth, referencing the International Monetary Fund’s recent positive outlook on the country.
In a dramatic climax, he called on all APC members in the National Assembly to rise and support a motion to endorse President Tinubu as the party's sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
"I move, therefore, as the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that Mr. President be returned first, as the candidate of the APC unopposed, and secondly, as the next President for a second term."
The Senate President also took jabs at opposition parties, notably the People's Democratic Party (PDP), stating their influence had “over 100 holes” and was collapsing across the South-South region.
This public declaration not only signals early moves within the APC to solidify Tinubu's 2027 ambitions but also underscores growing fragmentation within opposition parties, with even sitting lawmakers reportedly lining up to cross over.

Whether this is a genuine wave of support or a calculated political performance remains to be seen, but one thing is clear 2027 politics is already in motion, and the race has unofficially begun.
