In a primary election that reshuffled the political deck in one of Nigeria’s most strategically watched senatorial districts, Lawmaker Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr has emerged as the APC’s candidate for the Abia South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections routing former NALDA Executive Secretary Prince Paul Ikonne and two other heavyweight contenders across all six local government areas in the district.
The results, announced at the APC Abia South Senatorial District Collation Centre in Aba by returning officer Prof. Emmanuel Kalu Agbaeze, confirmed that Erondu Jnr, who represents the Obingwa West State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, polled a commanding 16,640 votes. His nearest challenger, Dr. Nyerere Chinenye Anyim, managed only 5,206 votes. Hon. Blessing Nwagba came third with 4,456 votes, while Ikonne, the former National Agricultural Land Development Authority helmsman, finished a distant fourth with 4,099 votes.
The outcome was unambiguous: Erondu Jnr swept all six LGAs in the district, namely Aba North, Aba South, Obingwa, Osisioma Ngwa, Ugwunagbo, and Ukwa East, leaving no room for ambiguity about where grassroots support lies across the senatorial zone.
The significance of the Abia South contest extends well beyond party primaries. The district has, for nearly two decades, been synonymous with one name: Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the veteran lawmaker and former Senate Minority Leader whose political dominance over the zone has been near total since his first election to the upper chamber.
Abaribe, also from Obingwa LGA the same local government as Erondu Jnr has held the Abia South senate seat for close to 20 years, having served across multiple parties including PDP and APGA. His enduring influence has shaped the political culture of the district and set a high benchmark for whoever aspires to the seat.
The fact that Erondu Jnr’s emergence comes from within Abaribe’s own Obingwa LGA is not lost on political observers. Should the APC’s fortunes improve in Abia State ahead of 2027, the district could witness a historic generational transition within its own political DNA.
Who Is Erondu Jnr and Why Did He Win?
Nicknamed “Mr Empowerment” by his constituents, Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr has cultivated a reputation as a hands on grassroots lawmaker whose constituency projects and empowerment schemes have made him a household name across Obingwa and the broader Ngwa nation.
A foundation member of the APC in Abia, Erondu Jnr served as the party’s first Administrative Secretary in the state before later joining the PDP, and recently returned to the APC along with over 5,000 supporters, a defection that significantly strengthened the party’s structures in the zone. His ability to win across all six LGAs, not just his home base, signals a district wide acceptability that is rare in Nigeria’s fractious primary politics. His margin of victory more than 11,000 votes above the closest rival is being interpreted by political analysts as a rebuke of transactional politics and a validation of constituency level service delivery as an electoral currency.
The Four Who Fought: A Field of Heavy Credentials
What made the Abia South primary so closely watched was not just the stakes, it was the calibre of the field. Each of the four candidates brought significant political and professional pedigree to the contest, making Erondu Jnr’s district wide sweep all the more decisive.
Prince Paul Ikonne arrived at the primary as perhaps the most recognisable name in terms of federal executive visibility. A former Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) under the Buhari administration, Ikonne is also the Chief Executive Officer of Enyimba TV and Radio Limited, the broadcast arm of the Aba Football Club brand, giving him a foothold in both government and the commercial media landscape of the Aba economy. Despite that profile, his 4,099 votes placed him last in the contest, exposing the limits of administrative pedigree when tested against grassroots delegate mobilisation.
Dr. Nyerere Chinenye Anyim is one of the most experienced APC figures in the South East. A pioneer National Vice Chairman of the APC from the South East zone, he was the party’s governorship candidate in Abia State during the 2015 general elections and later served as the representative of the South East at the National Pension Commission, PenCom. A businessman with interests spanning pharmaceuticals, real estate, and manufacturing, Anyim is also known as a philanthropist and gospel artist who has championed free education initiatives since the early 1990s. His 5,206 votes placed him second but well behind the eventual winner.
Hon. Dr. Dame Blessing Nwagba brought a legislative and electoral track record that few women in Abia politics can match. A former member of the Abia State House of Assembly representing Aba North Constituency, Nwagba chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs, Social Welfare and Health and was the only female legislator in the 6th Abia House of Assembly. She was the APC senatorial candidate for Abia South in the 2023 general election, having previously run for governor under the Social Democratic Party. Despite her name recognition in Aba, she polled 4,456 votes and finished third.
What Comes Next
With the APC ticket secured, Erondu Jnr faces the larger battle of the 2027 general election in a district where the PDP and APGA have historically dominated. His candidacy will be closely watched as a test of whether the APC can finally break through in the Abia South senatorial zone.
The Abaribe factor will also loom large. As the veteran senator contests in 2027 under the Labour party platform, the leading party in Abia state could decisively shape the outcome of what is already shaping up as one of the most consequential senatorial races in the South East.
Results were announced by returning officer Prof. Emmanuel Kalu Agbaeze at the APC Abia South Senatorial District Collation Centre, Aba.
