The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public health warning over the circulation of counterfeit and potentially hazardous Colgate toothpaste in Nigeria.
The agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a complaint about the distribution of unregistered toothpaste products in Kaduna State, prompting an immediate investigation.
According to NAFDAC, officials who visited a retail outlet discovered two suspected counterfeit products labeled “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g” being sold to unsuspecting consumers.
The agency noted that the products failed to meet regulatory standards, lacking proper registration numbers, batch details, and verified manufacturing information factors that raise serious concerns about their safety.

NAFDAC further warned that such counterfeit items pose significant risks to public health, as they may contain harmful or substandard ingredients. The products have since been removed from the identified outlet, while investigations continue to trace their distribution network.
The shop owner reportedly told investigators that the goods were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative but could not provide proof of purchase, complicating efforts to track the supply chain.
In response, the agency has directed its zonal and state offices nationwide to intensify surveillance and ensure the removal of counterfeit products from circulation.
NAFDAC urged consumers, distributors, and retailers to exercise caution by verifying the authenticity of products before purchase or use. Members of the public are also encouraged to report any suspected counterfeit or substandard goods through the agency’s official channels.
The warning underscores ongoing concerns about counterfeit consumer goods in Nigeria and the need for increased vigilance to safeguard public health.
