Niger’s ruling junta has released around 50 detainees, including former ministers, a diplomat, a journalist, and soldiers accused of past coup attempts, following recommendations from a National Forum for Reconstruction held in February.
However, ousted President Mohamed Bazoum remains in detention despite international calls for his release. The junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has solidified its grip on power, with Tiani set to rule for the next five years.
Since taking over in July 2023, Niger’s military rulers have cut ties with France, expelled Western troops, and withdrawn from ECOWAS.

They have instead strengthened alliances with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Russia, with their foreign ministers scheduled to meet Russian officials in Moscow.
