The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Manila has drawn a hard line on consular access, announcing that Nigerians residing in the Philippines and Cambodia who cannot present proof of registration with the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Philippines will henceforth be turned away at the gate.
The directive, contained in a public notice dated May 20, 2026, cited alarm over the “very low number” of Nigerians captured in the official NIDOPHIL database, describing the situation as a matter that warranted immediate corrective action.
“No Nigerian national shall be attended to on any consular matter without presenting evidence of NIDOPHIL registration,” the embassy stated, adding that individuals without such proof would not be granted entry through the Dasmariñas Village Gate for consular services. The restriction, the embassy confirmed, extends to Nigerian students in the Philippines.
According to the embassy, the NIDOPHIL database serves as a critical tool for tracking Nigerian nationals abroad, monitoring their welfare, and providing timely support during emergencies. Monthly and annual dues paid by registered members are also used to assist Nigerians stranded or facing severe financial difficulties within the country.
The embassy provided registration links for both NIDOPHIL and the National Association of Nigerian Students, while indicating that NIDO Cambodia registration details would be released separately.
The development comes against a tense backdrop. Cambodia’s Royal Government has simultaneously issued a stern immigration directive ordering all African nationals currently in the country to depart before May 31, 2026, warning that anyone found remaining illegally from June 1 would face arrest, a two-year jail term, and a penalty of $8,000 before being permitted to leave. The Cambodian Police announced it would begin arresting undocumented foreigners at any location nationwide from that date.
The convergence of both directives has placed Nigerians in the Philippines and Cambodia under significant pressure to regularise their status or face consequences on multiple fronts.
