Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan and others at the closed-door meeting

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, and a delegation of senior South-East political figures converged on the Abuja residence of former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday for closed-door talks centred on the 2027 general elections.

The delegation included former Enugu Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo, ex-Imo Governor Achike Udenwa, former NDDC Managing Director Onyema Ugochukwu, and Senator Victor Umeh.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Obi said Jonathan expressed strong support for free and fair elections and firmly rejected any drift toward a one-party state in Nigeria.

“He wished that we have free, fair, credible elections,” Obi said, adding that Jonathan could not support a one-party system, describing him as Nigeria’s foremost example of democratic leadership.

On the question of a possible Jonathan endorsement, Obi was measured. “We are not talking about endorsement yet. When I become a candidate, I will come for it,” he said.

Obi framed the visit as a consultative call, placing Jonathan in the same elder-statesman bracket as former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida figures whose counsel opposition stakeholders now actively seek ahead of the election cycle.
